Direct Aegean flights · 4* & 5* hotels · Bardo Museum · 4×4 to the oases · Camels in the Sahara

We visit Carthage, once mistress of the seas, the Bardo Museum with its collection of Roman mosaics, and the Berber villages, staying at selected 4* and 5* hotels with meals at the hotels.

A camel ride in the Sahara, a 4×4 trip to the mountain oases and a farewell dinner at La Victoire restaurant round off the Arabian tale.

Itinerary

01Day

Athens – Tunis

Meet at Athens airport and take the direct flight to Tunis. Our guide and representative welcome us, followed by the transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay.

02Day

Tunis – Bardo Museum – Carthage

Breakfast and a visit to the Bardo Museum, with one of the finest and largest mosaic collections in the world. Along the main avenues of Tunis we see the country’s administrative centre and the Zitouna Mosque, then walk down into the great covered market. From the gate of the Medina we reach Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the city’s modern commercial centre. Past the Lake of Tunis we arrive in Carthage, for the ancient theatre and the Baths of Antoninus. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

03Day

Tunis – Monastir – Kairouan – Gafsa – Tozeur

Breakfast and departure. In Monastir, birthplace of President Bourguiba, we visit his mausoleum. In Kairouan, the Aghlabid basins, the Mosque of the Barber with its arabesques and the first great mosque built in North Africa, then the Medina and its market, time for coffee, tea and traditional sweets, and a visit to a carpet workshop. Along the foothills of the Atlas, via Gafsa, we reach Tozeur, Tunisia’s largest oasis. Dinner and a visit to the Dar Cheraït folk museum. Overnight stay.

04Day

Tozeur – Nefta – Chebika – Tamerza – Ong Jemel

Breakfast and a tour of Tozeur, with its distinctive architecture and market. We walk through the oasis, the largest in Tunisia, and visit its zoo with desert animals (optionally by horse-drawn carriage). Lunch. By 4×4 we head to the Nefta oasis and the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Ong Jemel, where Star Wars was filmed. Back to the hotel, free time, dinner and overnight stay.

05Day

Tozeur – Chott el Djerid – Kebili – Douz, camels in the Sahara

Breakfast and departure for Douz, the “gateway to the desert”. We cross the salt lake of Chott el Djerid, its surface covered in salt, looking like a glacier after rain, with its mirages and famous “desert roses”. A photo stop and, via the Kebili oasis, we reach Douz. Our hotel is right next to the dunes, and before sunset we ride camels into the Sahara. Dinner and overnight stay.

06Day

Douz – Matmata – El Jem – Sousse – Port El Kantaoui – Hammamet

Breakfast and departure for the north. In Matmata, a Berber village in a lunar landscape, we visit a traditional troglodyte cave dwelling. Then the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem and, through endless olive groves, Sousse, with a stop in the centre and free time in its market. We continue to the resort of Port El Kantaoui, with its marina and traditional architecture. Check in at our hotel in Hammamet, dinner and overnight stay.

07Day

Breakfast and a free day to explore Hammamet. Dinner and overnight stay. Optionally, an extra dinner with traditional Tunisian cuisine and a “Thousand and One Nights” music show.

08Day
